Singapore leads Southeast Asia as a data center hub, accounting for more than 60% of the region’s market. At a rate of 10% yearly, Singapore’s growth is attributed to government initiatives aimed at attracting large corporations and its robust communications infrastructure. In Singapore, more than half of the data centers operate at less than 5 kiloWatts per rack. In the first half of 2013, data center investments in Singapore that were related to facility equipment and solution increased by 3.6% year-on-year to reach US$1.04 billion.
Only about 25% of APAC’s residents had access to the Internet in 2012. This provides enormous potential for growth, as well as substantial and sustained demand to upgrade the ICT infrastructure supporting consumer and business data usage (which includes national and international networks and data center space). Improvements in the cost of power, and a strong score with respect to ease of doing business, are making the Singapore market a very attractive investment for data center organizations. There is significant investment in the market from many companies. However, the comparatively high cost of labor and high rate of inflation has kept Singapore ranked in the middle of APAC nations regarding cost effectiveness.
A number of other organizations, including Amazon Web Services, IBM, and Salesforce.com, recently established Singapore data centers. The regional expansion comprises approximately half of Southeast Asia’s data center capacity. The Asia Pacific Gateway (APG) cable is on target for completion in Q3 2014, when 10,000 km of international fibre optic cable system will link Malaysia to Korea and Japan with seven branches to other Asian countries, including Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Korea. Singapore’s fiber infrastructure will also continue to improve with increased connectivity to Australia once ASC and APX-West are operational in 2014 and to the US with APX-West in 2015.
Here at COLOTRAQ, we have created a significant value-add for our customers: we know the business, markets, and facilities.
