There is a trend in telecom to sell products, not solutions. We mistake technology for a product (think SD-WAN or WebRTC). We have been on the cloud ride for a few years now, once again forgetting that cloud is a term that covers a large swath of services.
At COLOTRAQ, we have been trying to figure out how to help partners deliver strategy to their customers’ cloud ideas. Many businesses have ideas about cloud, like that it is cheaper or panacea for all things IT. An arena of product replacement that works well for selling bandwidth does not translate well in the world of IT.
Everyone agrees that businesses will adopt a Hybrid WAN architecture. The reality is that it has always been so; hybrid has always been the state of IT. MPLS, colocation, Internet pipes, email, websites, CRM and more has created a hybrid environment built on public, private and somewhere in between.
Another big hack occurred this week on Verifone, the credit card payment terminal company. The outage at Amazon S3 shut down almost one-third of the Internet.
We hear that colocation is dying since everything is going cloud. The fact is there has never been more data center construction than now, precisely due to the growth of cloud services. (All those CPUs that run your Uber app have to reside somewhere.)
The other pieces of the puzzle involve the changing buyers of colocation and the enterprise hybrid network strategy. The buyers of colocation are more often cloud computing companies (SaaS, IaaS, PaaS, storage). Apps like LinkedIn, Uber, iTunes and Snap are housed in data centers globally. Yet here at COLOTRAQ we are still seeing enterprises buying colocation. However, with their hybrid strategy for WAN and infrastructure, the size of the colocation space may be smaller than before.
When I started my company, COLOTRAQ, back in 1999, the data center landscape was vastly different than it is today. The majority of service providers had come from the world of Commercial Real Estate and Construction and that culture had permeated much of how things were done. Back then, it was primarily about selling space with associated power and bandwidth or “power, pipe and ping” as we used to call it.
One of COLOTRAQ’s premiere partners is NTT. While it is true that COLOTRAQ represents over 400 data centers around the world, we also represent Tier 1 network providers like NTT as well as cloud computing service providers.
One of the easiest channel programs to work with, according to RAD-INFO Inc, is Cologix. With 24 data centers across 24 markets in North America (yes, Canada and USA), there is over 700,000 square feet of carrier neutral space to collocate.
